Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus that causes acute and chronic necroinflammatory liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV is characterized by specific hepatotropism, non-cytopathic and non-lytic replication, and a tendency to develop chronic infection. HepG2.2.15 cells are a hepatoblastoma cell line capable of expressing HBV antigens and secreting complete HBV particles. They are currently the most suitable cell line for studying HBV replication and the response of hepatocytes to interferon (IFN).
